HOW YOUR SEPTIC SYSTEM WORKS

Your septic system is designed to receive, treat, and dispose of waste from your plumbing system. Water is separated from the sludge and scum (solids and fats, oils, and grease) and then moved into a drain field. Here, it is filtered by bacteria and finally reentered into the groundwater.

As for the sludge and scum, they must be periodically manually pumped and should never enter the drain field with the water.

SEPTIC MAINTENANCE TIPS

Your septic system should pumped every three to five years by a professional. This can help you be proactive about any early issues that could cause health problems, environmental issues, and high expenses down the line.

Here are some other maintenance tips you should follow to keep your septic system running at peak performance.
  • Be mindful of what you pour down your drains. Don’t pour coffee grounds, cooking grease, or household chemicals down the sink or toilet.
  • Your toilet isn’t another garbage can. Don’t flush feminine hygiene products, dental floss, diapers, cigarette butts, cat litter, or medications down the toilet.
  • Be aware of your drain field’s location. Don’t park your vehicle or plant trees on top of the area, as they can damage the drain lines.
  • Watch your water use. Don’t run the shower, dishwasher, washing machine, and toilet at once. This can put a strain on your septic system.
We’re here to help you keep your septic system in good working condition. Call us for all your septic needs!
